Process

This work explores mixing the modern and the historical, the natural and the man made. We as humans have a fundamental need for familiarity, or to be surrounded by natural forms.

I have at first glance fulfilled that need with the use of a Grecian column motif, thereby putting viewers at their ease. When one or both of these elements – that is familiarity and natural forms – are present in a work, a mental receptiveness is established which enables me to push the viewer further beyond the surface aesthetic. In this way, lighting becomes sculpture and the existing boundaries between the two fade.

At first glance the work recalls an antique Swedish stove, but transforms this typology, historically built into the wall, into a totemic, freestanding object.

Covered in traditional ceramic tiles upon which carved abstract organic forms, a recurring language of glyph-like shapes in my work, appear.

Dimple explores the idea of dependency and support in both an emotional and physical sense represented in this piece by the inherent material qualities of glass, metal and marble.

Whilst the glass is still hot and in the hand blowing stage, an impression is made in the glass oviform allowing the carved marble sphere to nestle in the resulting dimple. The assemblage rests on a brass cube with a hand-antiqued finish.

Each Dimple assembly is a unique sculpture, handmade to order.
